Before You Turn on Your AC…

You need to know your air conditioning system will provide you relief from the heat, which is why you should consider the shape your AC system is in by taking these steps. This way, you can ensure that your AC system is ready to go the moment you need it.

Start Inside Your Home:

• Thermostat – An outdated thermostat can be keeping you from saving money and energy. New programmable thermostats allow you to schedule your air conditioner’s activity to keep energy use low when you don’t need it.

• Ductwork – Check any accessible ductwork for wear, separation or damage. Many homes can lose upwards of 20 percent of their cool air because of poor ductwork conditions.

• Air Vents – Make sure nothing is blocking the airflow through the vents. Tie back any drapes or curtains, clear away furniture or toys and clean any dust or dirt that may have built up.

• Drain Line – Keeping your drain line clear is a vital step! There is a drain located by the indoor cooling coil, typically mounted above the furnace in the basement. By flushing one cup of chlorine bleach down the train and rinsing it with a gallon of water, you can keep your drain clear.

• Air Filter – Filters should be changed every three months, and definitely before the start of every cooling system. A dirty filter can not only block airflow, but can cause dust and dirt to be circulated into your home.

Checking the Outdoor Equipment

• Outdoor Condenser – Ensure there is no blockage in or near the equipment. Clean the area around it by removing leaves, vines or debris that can block the interior components and affect performance. Check for missing panels as well, as they protect the electrical connections of your equipment.
• Refrigerant Lines – Properly insulated refrigerant lines can improve the efficiency of the system. If you believe the insulation has been compromised, make sure you contact Fsi Oil and Propane right away to repair the problem.
• Electrical – Visually examine the electrical connections on the outdoor unit – leave the physical inspection to the professionals! – If you notice any exposed copper wire or singe marks, let one of our technicians know right away.
• Lifespan – There’s no expiration date on your equipment, but typically air conditioners do wear out over time. A 10-year-old air conditioner may be 20 to 40% less efficient than modern system on the market today.

Turn on your air conditioning system by adjusting the thermostat and listen for the equipment to turn on.
