Home Water Treatment 101

Water treatment 101 massachusetts

Clean drinking water is vital to your health – but how can you make sure you’re getting the cleanest water possible from your tap?

Simple: install a home water purification system.

Water System Options

There are a number of high-tech home water filtration systems available today, and each has its own unique features and benefits. Here are three of the better ones available today.

  • Reverse-osmosis system – Considered to be one of the most effective home water filtration options, a reverse-osmosis (RO) system uses air pressure to push water through a semipermeable membrane. The RO process eliminates almost all harmful impurities from your water, including lead, cryptosporidium, sodium, and other contaminants, leaving your water healthy, fresh, and delicious. The RO equipment fits under your sink or in the basement.
  • Activated-carbon system – This common solution is the least expensive type of water purification system; it removes chlorine, sediment, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from your drinking water, improving its taste and smell. This type of system is usually installed under the sink and uses replaceable filter cartridges.
  • Cation-exchange (a.k.a. ion-exchange) water filter systems –  In this water filter conditioning system, positively charged ions are used to attract negatively charged ions that are harmful, such as manganese and calcium. Prolonged exposure to manganese can adversely affect your body, and calcium can damage pipes and give your water a foul taste.
  • Whole-house carbon filters – Federal law requires all municipal and town water supplies to be chlorinated to remove bacteria. A simple back-washing or non-backwashing filter can remove this chlorine.
