Why You Should Turn Your Heat Down…Not Off!

 

Digital thermostat in the living roomWhen you are away from your house, you may have the urge to turn your heat off. It may sound like a better idea in the long run, but doing so can waste more money than just leaving it to run.

Turning your heat off completely can cause your home to cool down quickly. This will then cause your heating system to have to work harder to get it back to a comfortable temperature.

At night and when you are away, it is recommended to just turn your thermostat down 7-10 degrees lower than what you would typically have the heat set at. By doing this, the U.S. Department of Energy states you can save as much as 10% a year on heating. Take caution to turning your thermostat down dramatically. If you do this your system will require a lot of work to warm up again.

If you are turning your heat up, it may be tempting to turn the thermostat high for a quicker reaction. Unfortunately, your heater does not work this way. Doing this will only over work your system.
